HANNAH ARTERTON

How would you describe your new show SAFE?
SAFE is an 8-part crime thriller for Netflix. It’s set in a gated community in an affluent area where everyone knows each other. However, when two teenagers go missing, things start to unravel, and secrets are exposed.

How would you describe your character and what drew you to her?
I play DC Emma Castle, an ambitious young detective that’s new to the community. She takes on the case as an outsider, but she has her own reasons for being there which also become apparent. I was drawn to Emma’s confidence, her intelligence, and her vulnerability.

Can you remember where you were/what you were doing when you found out you had got the role?
I was working in my local pub when I found out Harlan had written something new and wanted me to be part of it. I think that day was my last shift!

What was the energy like on set? Have you become close to your fellow cast members?
The energy on set was fantastic. Really relaxed and fun, which made it much easier to really get into the hard emotional scenes when they came around. The entire cast was really lovely, but I became particularly close to Amanda Abbington (who plays Sophie, my detective partner). We’ve become really good friends.

Tell me a bit about your background, where did you grow up, would you say you grew up in a creative family setting? Were your parents supportive?
I grew up in Gravesend in Kent. My parents don’t have creative jobs (my mum runs a cleaning business, and my dad is a metal worker), but my upbringing was very creative. Our house was full of music and books, and lots of my mum’s friends and family were very musical. We had lots of guitars and keyboards in the house, and my sister and I regularly put on shows for my mum. My parents are very supportive, and regularly visit me on set. I think they find it all a bit surreal and strange. Which it indeed is at times!

What would be your top 5 favourite things to do in London that you would tell a tourist to do/go see?
I love the Tate Modern and the British Museum. I also really enjoy the Southbank, particularly on a sunny day. In the autumn, Highgate Cemetery is pretty spectacular. And I know everyone says this, but Gordon’s Wine Bar really is as special as everyone makes it out to be.

Who would you want to play you in a biopic?
Debbie Harry would be fun. Or Agnetha Fältskog.
